The sad news of the passing of Dr. Robert Shuffett came this morning from a phone call from his sons, Stan and Don to Frank Davis. Robert Shuffett was a Master Tournament Player who actively played the tournament circuit for over 65 years.  A lifetime ACF member and generous supporter of checkers. We celebrated and recognized his checker achievements as our “Tournament Honoree at the 2011 Southern States Open in Lebanon, TN. Frank Davis, president of Tennessee Checker Association presented Mr. Shuffett a plaque for publishing severalDr. Shuffett accepts his lifetime achievement plaque - 11Southern.jpg (70243 bytes) classic checker books and a lifetime of playing and promoting Frank Davis presents Dr. Shuffett his lifetime achievement plaque - 11Southern.jpg (80872 bytes)checkers. Mr. Shuffett is best known for these classics: World Class Checkers” (match games for the World Title - Marion Tinsley vs Asa Long 1985, and his 2nd match, Marion Tinsley vs Don Lafferty 1987) Each match was 40 games. Copyright/published by Robert L. Shuffett 1988, 94 pages. Considered one of the greatest match books ever written with mind-boggling play;  His Checkers, The Tinsley Way CTTW” (All Tinsley's Games), by Robert L. Shuffett, M.D. published 1982, p 173. A Classic, the games of the greatest players of all time. Master Players dote over this book because it gives Marion Tinsley's 10+ moves into all 144 restricted 3-Move Openings, these games are a study in excellence... again, mind boggling checkers; and his co-author, America's Best Checkers - an encyclopedia of modern play  (Tinsley v Hellman) by Tom Wiswell and Robert L. Shuffett, published 1957, p 177.  Robert was a championship competitor and definitely won his share of matches and tournaments, but a modest individual who often shared checker strategy and correct published play with other players after the match.  He was always genuine, friendly, and likeable. Everyone who knew him as a friend or checker player would agree, you can't meet a greater friend or a finer checker player than Robert Shuffett. He leaves a huge void in our grand ole game and will be truly missed. Wednesday Morning, April 2, 2014

I want to share a beautiful little video with you that Bobby Rice sent me the link. It was produced by KET which is Kentucky’s statewide public television network that provides PBS programming and educational services. This interview was filmed around Dr. Shuffett’s 91st birthday in 2013.

This gives you a more personal appreciation of our Dr. "Doc" Shuffett. No one could write this... you must view the video to see what a genuinely humble person he was. We are so fortunate to call him our friend and an ACF checker player member.
